1100 Architect Participates in 2025 OHNY Weekend
On Sat, October 18th, 1100 Architect was proud to participate in Open House New York (OHNY) Weekend 2025, an annual citywide event that offers the public rare access to significant buildings and design projects across the five boroughs.
This year, we hosted guided tours of our recently completed Berkeley Carroll School: Carroll Street Expansion in Park Slope, Brooklyn—a project that transforms an 1898 Renaissance Revival–style townhouse into a dynamic new home for the school’s Lower School program.
The renovation converts eight former apartments into light-filled, flexible classrooms and shared spaces designed to support a growing and evolving curriculum. Strategic interventions—including cellar excavation, a rear yard addition, and new floor connections—maximize usable space and enhance circulation, while achieving full ADA accessibility.
Aiming for LEED Gold certification, the project incorporates a range of sustainable measures such as an all-electric system, low-infiltration windows, sustainable materials, LED lighting, and a “science roof” terrace designed as an outdoor learning environment.
The project’s success reflects the close collaboration with the Berkeley Carroll School community, whose commitment to sustainability and joyful learning shaped every design decision. During OHNY Weekend, visitors—including educators, alumni, architects, and neighbors—were invited to experience the school’s newest addition alongside 1100 Architect Principal Gwen Conners and Karen Benson of Berkeley Carroll.
We’re grateful to OHNY and all who attended for helping celebrate the value of design in education and community life.
