Metro Pictures Gallery Renovation
1100 Architect’s renovation of Metro Pictures in Chelsea expanded and restructured the gallery’s existing footprint. The former sequence of three equal-sized galleries was reorganized into two larger exhibition spaces, joined by a transitional zone. The new plan provides greater curatorial flexibility and a more gracious and dynamic visitor experience. Removing the solid wall at the entrance opens the interior to the street, improving visibility and engagement.
The overall exhibition area was increased by 16% without enlarging the total size of the gallery within the building envelope. A previously prominent steel staircase was replaced by a discreet aluminum stair, allowing the architecture to recede in favor of the artwork.
