House on Ikema Island
Perched on a cliff overlooking the East China Sea, this residence on Japan’s Ikema Island serves as a meditative coastal retreat. The home is organized across two levels: a faceted concrete base houses the entry, carport, and mechanical spaces, while the living areas above occupy a rectangular volume oriented toward the sea. Interior spaces include two bedrooms, two tatami rooms, two baths, and open plan living, dining, and kitchen areas. Traditional Japanese elements—shoji screens, wood paneling, and tatami mats—are integrated with contemporary materials and detailing. Large apertures frame expansive ocean views and connect the interiors to the natural surroundings.
