Germantown Academy Innovation Lab & Makerspace
The Beard Center for Innovation at Germantown Academy is a 21st-century learning environment for collaborative, hands-on education. What had been a little-used computer lab and a portion of the existing library was transformed into a flexible learning space in two parts: Innovation Lab and a Makerspace. Custom moveable partitions in the Innovation Lab allow flexible reconfigurations accommodating individual study, small group collaboration, and larger gatherings such as lectures and robotics competitions. The Makerspace is akin to more traditional learning environments, providing a runway for experimentation with technologies like 3D printing and laser cutting. By stressing transparency, the design creates spaces that visually communicate with one another, resulting in an engaging environment that promotes cross-disciplinary learning.
