MoMA Design Store SoHo

For the Museum of Modern Art’s initial presence beyond its Midtown Manhattan home, 1100 Architect created a contemporary retail environment within an historically landmarked building in Soho. The design maximizes openness and flexibility, making use of modular floor panels and a gridded furniture display system that allow the showroom to accommodate a changing stock of merchandise. The original cast-iron columns were enclosed in slabs of glass, lending the space a contemporary sensibility while referencing the building’s history. A backlit polyvinyl membrane stretches across the ceiling of the ground level and continues along one wall of the ground down to the cellar floor in a single, folding surface. This feature doubles as lighting, washing the space in soft, even light.
