Reopening of NYC Parks Lost Battalion Hall Recreation Center
Lost Battalion Hall Recreation Center reopened on October 9 following a comprehensive renovation by 1100 Architect for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. NYC Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura joined local elected officials for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the reopening. The $25.9 million renovation updates the 36,000-square-foot Rego Park facility with reorganized recreation spaces, improved accessibility, and new building systems.
A redesigned entrance and lobby introduce a glass-enclosed stair connecting the building’s two levels. Updated fitness rooms, a spin studio, and a dedicated weightlifting area support a range of activities, with glass partitions and acoustic separation allowing programs to run simultaneously. Accessible restrooms, new changing facilities, and upgraded heating, cooling, and life safety systems improve everyday use throughout the center.
Originally built by the Works Progress Administration in 1939 as a veterans’ hall, the building has served as a neighborhood recreation center since the 1960s. The renovation supports that continuing public role while protecting historic features, including the gymnasium’s WPA-era murals.
