New York University Department of Linguistics

For NYU’s Department of Linguistics, 1100 Architect transformed a 19th-century manufacturing building into a cohesive and contemporary academic environment. The renovation enhances communication among the department’s five divisions, introducing new program spaces that support both research and teaching. The first floor now serves as a transparent and welcoming public zone, featuring a reception area, student lounge, and lecture rooms visible from the street. On the upper floors, centralized lounges and teaching labs encourage collaboration, with more private faculty and student offices arranged around them. Flexible glass partitions allow spaces to expand or contract as needed, accommodating everything from quiet study to group seminars. The result is a light-filled, interconnected setting that reflects the department’s dynamic and interdisciplinary spirit.
