House on the Upper East Side

The design of this townhouse, situated in a neighborhood of ornate historical-revival brownstones, adapts the geometry and materiality of its context and expresses it in a contemporary architectural language. Clad in large slabs of limestone and resin-baked mahogany, the modernist façade folds into a setback that creates separation between the entryway and the sidewalk, providing an extra measure of privacy from the street. Inside, sliding panels separating the living and dining areas can be tucked into a thin wall alcove to create a generous open area.
