1100: Celebrates the Opening of the Art Depot in Darmstadt

In 2020, Darmstadt’s Urban Development Corporation commissioned 1100 Architect to design and build a central Art Depot to house collections of several art organizations of Darmstadt. After an intensive planning process, construction started in mid-2021. Less than two years later, in the Spring of 2023, several art collections were moved into the building. Numerous art objects of all kinds and sizes, ranging from paintings, prints, and sculptures to historic documents, photos, and film have received a new home with precisely regulated environments for their optimal preservation.

At the invitation of Lord Mayor Jochen Partsch, and Darmstadt’s Urban Development Corporation, 1100 attended the opening festivities along with many representatives of the various art organizations.

In his speech, Lord Mayor Jochen Partsch, called the new building a “treasure chest” and “a place where history can endure.” The Managing Director of 1100 Architect’s Frankfurt Studio, Gunter Weyrich, accompanied by Project Manager, Katharina Herzog, also extended warm words to the guests of the festivities, stating "1100 Architect has created a protective shell that will preserve the wonderful art collection for generations to come".

With the construction of a central Art Depot, 1100 Architect was not only able to make a significant contribution to the preservation of the city’s art treasures, but also ensure a climate-neutral operation through onsite energy generation via a photovoltaic array on the entire roof of the building. The extensive greening of the facade will make the building a “green oasis” in the midst of an industrial neighborhood.
