House in Upstate New York

Bedford, NY

2008

Sited on six-and-a-half acres of forested land in Bedford, New York we designed a 12,500-square-foot contemporary home and nearby boathouse that responds to the sloping topography of this view site. While one of our clients was particularly inspired by grand eighteenth- and nineteenth-century French architecture, the other was drawn to the abstract leanness of mid-century modernism. These two distinct stylistic preferences informed our approach to establish a new formal language expressing both individual’s desires and personalities without referring explicitly to the aforementioned styles. Stacked stone block, inspired by historic stone-lined horse trails commonly found in Bedford, coupled with clean lines and grand proportions harmoniously synthesize the landscape and structure.
