Project Description

Abraham House

Bronx, NY

2006

Abraham House is a non-profit organization that provides a residential program for non-violent criminal offenders and their families, helping to combat the cycle of recidivism. For their headquarters in the Bronx, 1100 Architect renovated two previously dilapidated brownstones and designed a new building adjacent to them. Intuitive circulation paths between the three buildings integrate them into a coherent and efficient whole. The lower two floors serve the extensive outreach programs, arraying a kitchen capable of providing several hundred meals a day, private rooms for one-on-one counseling sessions, and a daylit flexible space that can be used to hold group meetings, exercise classes, or meditation workshops. Living quarters for staff, clients, and clergy are located on the third and fourth floors. Cost-effective material selection and rigorous value engineering allowed us to work within a tight budget to deliver a contemporary, finely detailed space befitting Abraham House’s mission.
