1100: Breaks Ground on the Historic Mühltalbad Pool

1100 Architect was commissioned to design the renovation and modernization of the Eberstadt "Mühltalbad" swimming pool located in the southernmost part of Darmstadt, Germany.

Originally built between 1957 and 1959 by the city of Darmstadt, this open-air swimming pool is one the first "Adventure Pools" in Germany.  It offers a range of amenities including a diving pool, a competition-size swimming pool, a children's paddling pool, and an S-shaped giant slide. One of its unique features is also an underwater panorama window through which divers can be observed.

As part of the renovation, the entire facility will be made barrier-free with the integration of pool ramps, a new elevator, and accessible rooms. Sustainable strategies are also being implemented, including the installation of air heat pump systems and a solar thermal system for the service water in showers and bathrooms. The roof’s existing absorber system, which heats the pool water using solar energy, is being expanded and supplemented with an additional photovoltaic system to generate electricity.

Three new buildings to house the mechanical equipment for the pools are intentionally designed to differentiate themselves from the historic structures. While the existing structures will retain their yellow brick appearance, the new buildings will be cast in concrete with green roofs.  The modernizations will allow the facility to meet the latest technical and sustainability standards while preserving the historical character of the pool and surrounding landscape.
