Brooklyn Friends School, Library & Makerspace

For Brooklyn Friends School, an independent preK-12 school in Downtown Brooklyn, 1100 Architect designed this library as a shared learning environment. In what had been a series of smaller rooms, the design creates an open space to provide more flexibility and daylight.

The new layout features separate areas for the Lower and Middle Schools, divided by a classroom with sliding glass doors and modular furniture that allow the entire space to be easily reconfigured into one large room. The design also contains a new maker space to be shared by both schools, equipped with 3D printers, computers, and other materials for hands-on learning. This project is part of an ongoing partnership with Brooklyn Friends, having previously completed a lobby and cafeteria, a series of renovations and a Family Center.
